Aggregates form about 75% of concrete either by volume or by weight. Therefore its properties are important if it were to contribute to good concrete properties.
Aggregates must be either rounded or roughly cubicle in shape. Flaky and Elongated pieces should not be present. It has to be clean and free from veins and adherent coating. It should also be free from injurious amounts of disintegrated pieces, alkalis, vegetable matter and other deleterious substances.
Good aggregates are strong, hard, dense, durable and well graded. It should also possess chemical stability and exhibit abrasion resistance. Then only will it contribute to concrete strength and durability.
