Now we talk about the "brother" of Stress: Strain.
noun noun: strain; plural noun: strains a force tending to pull or stretch something to an extreme or damaging degree. "the rope snapped under the strain"
We all understand this example sentence very well. In material science and physics, strain has a specific meaning. When an external force is applied on a body, there is some change occur in the dimension of the body. The ratio of this change of dimension in the body to its actual length is called strain i.e.
strain= (change in length)/(original length) = dl/l
Explained simply, Strain is the relative change in shape or size of an object due to externally force applied.
